Running QB on current hardware and operating systems can be challenging and may seem impossible at times, but that's where DOSBox comes in. DOSBox emulates a DOS environment.
Just a few months ago I discovered that some people have been using DOSBox to run QB. I'm kinda new to DOSBox, but it looks promising. I have not done extensive testing, but I have found that when I run QB under DOSBox on my WinXP laptop, the QB environment (and debugging features) actually function the way they should.
If you go to the DOSBox web site ( http://www.dosbox.com/ ), you will find all the information you need, including a list of front ends. I have only tried one front end, D-Fend Reloaded, and I love it. I just dragged the .zip file with my QB install into the D-Fend Reloaded frontend and waited a few second. I double clicked QB in the interface and like magic QB was there.
I wish I'd have known about this before doing all the weird acrobatics with text editors.
